Jeff Dunkleberger

My photography adventure began in college while earning my degree in Business Advertising, enjoying a minor in Television Production. The degree earned me a living, while the minor inspired over 30 years of practicing photography. Living in the southwest, the stunning scenery drove my passion towards landscape photography. I had my first landscape photo published in a wildlife magazine in 2008. This hobby continued with credited photos in local news and publications until my retirement two years ago.

Retirement has accelerated developing my passion. Joining the North Valley Photo Club (NVPC) further developed my skills through discussions and critiques with other passionate photographers. I learned the most through mentoring other aspiring photographers. NVPC involvement gave me the determination to enter my work and be accepted for exhibitions. Recently, a credited photo of mine was used in a History Channel episode.

While photography adventures began with landscapes and wildlife, I was always drawn towards playing with light. Early interest in night and low light photography evolved into more abstract fields. Currently I am captivated working with shutter blur, lens ball, black light, and light painting- stretching my imagination and working within the artistry side of photography.

My journey into photography began when my father brought me a Minolta “spy camera” from Japan in the 1960s. Over the years, my passion for photography evolved, and by the time I was in college, I knew I wanted to create large, breathtaking images capturing the vast vistas I encountered throughout the West and around the world. I also sought to reveal the intimate details of nature—flowers in bloom, cascading waterfalls—and the character etched in the weathered faces of fishermen in Baja, Mexico.
Although I trained in Art Education at the University of New Mexico, my path led me to earn two additional degrees in Earth Sciences and to a 40-year career teaching science. Throughout my travels, I photographed the world through a lens of “awe,” developing a deep appreciation for nature’s power and the delicate balance of the planet’s biomes. Each summer, I attended institutes and workshops that took me across the USA and abroad—to New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. My selected photos have appeared in scientific literature, showcasing subjects from whale flukes off the coast of New Zealand to dramatic uplifts and contorted formations in the San Juan Basin.
I was invited to create the *Teacher’s Guide to Valles Caldera* website for New Mexico EPSCoR, where all the site images are my own. My connection to the Jemez Mountains dates back to my teen years as a camp counselor at age 14. Over time, I’ve served on advisory boards for *Discovery Magazine*, IMAX (*Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk*), and the National Solar Observatory (NOAO)—each experience offering opportunities to photograph and share the beauty I encountered.
I’ve exhibited my work at ANMPAS and *Shades of Grey* for the past six years. I am also a certified Nikon Professional and a New Mexico True photographer.

Since retiring from the Albuquerque Academy, where I taught Earth Systems Science, I’ve spent several years showing and selling my work at the Albuquerque Photographers’ Gallery in Old Town. Now, my husband John and I devote more time to photographic expeditions in our four-wheel-drive Sportsmobile van. Our adventures have included *100 Days in Alaska*, *Chasing Fall*—a two-month journey from New Mexico to Newfoundland and back—and one of my favorites, a trip to the tip of Baja and back.

My interest in photography began during my college years but took off after retiring from a career in software development at Sandia National Laboratories in 2017. I joined the Enchanted Lens Camera Club that same year. Now as an “Emeritus” member of the club, I work with a small group of photographers throughout the year who are developing their individual portfolios. While my primary interest is in photographing the beauty of nature and wild creatures, I’ve also enjoyed capturing landscapes using a drone and finding unique compositions of hot air balloons; I’ve been serving as a member of the photography team for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta for the past two years. I've been an award winner in several New Mexico photographic art shows including Shades of Gray, and the Annual New Mexico Photographic Art Show. My work has been shown at the Corrales Bosque Gallery. I’ve also won several awards in the Valles de Oro National Wildlife Refuge's annual photography contest, including a Best of Show in 2024.
